  • The masks were customarily sanded with rough leaves or shark skin after carving.
  • In Sri Lanka, masks are worn for a variety of reasons.
  • They are employed in ceremonies to banish demons or heal ailments, as well as in traditional dance, drama, and comedies, as well as significant pageants and processions.

BRIEF GARDEN

  • Bevis Bawa was the younger brother of Geoffrey Bawa, a well-known architect who designed numerous notable buildings, including Heritance Ahungalla.
  • Bevis Bawa, like his brother, transformed this former rubber plantation into a beautiful sequence of landscaped gardens.
  • You are led through many tableaux and views, nooks and bowers, creative planting and screening.
  • In addition to the minimalist dwelling, there are statues and artwork strewn.
  • Many of the pieces are Bawa's own, but Donald Friend, an Australian artist, is also highly represented.

LUNUGANGA

  • For nearly 50 years, Geoffrey Bawa experimented with his space, light, and size ideas on his estate, Lunuganga.
  • It was a rubber plantation on a peninsula extending out into a lake when he bought it in 1948.
  • Bawa methodically changed the ground and plants over time to achieve his goal, shaving off the top of a hill in one example to better his view of the lake.
  • Expect a riot of flowers placed in neat boundaries rather than a riot of flowers planted in clean borders.
  • This is essentially a succession of outdoor rooms with carefully framed vistas - a Buddhist stupa on a mountaintop, a Grecian figure placed elegantly.
  • Throughout his life, Bawa changed and experimented with the spaces and structures.
  • The garden was donated to the Lunuganga Trust after his death in 2003, and it is open to the public.

TAKE A SAFARI AT MADU RIVER

#Fun

  • The Madu River is a shallow waterway in Sri Lanka's southwest that empties into the sea in Balapitiya.
  • A Madu River Safari, a 10-minute drive from Ahungalla, is a must-see on your agenda. Only a few of the river's more than 48 islands are inhabited.
  • It could be one of Sri Lanka's last unspoiled mangrove ecosystems.
  • For a boat excursion, we approached the 'Madu River Safari' company, which had a lot of great reviews online.
  • They charged us Rs.2000 for an hour on the boat, which we thought was relatively reasonable considering some establishments charge the same per person!
  • We were awed as our driver/guide carried us along the most picturesque of paths, strapped in with our life jackets.
  • The Madu River is primarily surrounded by mangroves, making for a breathtaking sight when you ride into and through them!
  • The river itself is lovely since, at one point during your safari, you will be surrounded by an unending amount of water and lush flora, which is simply breathtaking!

VISIT A TURTLE HATCHERY

#Fun

  • Can find a stretch of Turtle Hatcheries just a few minutes before Ahungalla in the town of Kosgoda. We went to the Marine
  • Turtles Protection Centre (also known as Amarasena Turtle Hatchery), which was a little off the beaten path, but we'd heard good things about their work and wanted to see it for ourselves.
  • While many places are more concerned with profit, the Marine Turtles Protection Centre, which a family runs, is more concerned with the turtles.
  • Santha, the Centre's 2nd generation owner, was our gracious guide as he explained the work they conduct.
  • They patrol the beach at night, looking for mother sea turtles depositing their eggs, and if they find one, they take great care to safeguard her while she is nesting.
  • They move the eggs from the beach to the hatchery for safety reasons, and they keep a strict watch of the days to determine when they will hatch to be released into the ocean as soon as possible.
  • Leatherback, Green, Hawksbill, Loggerhead, and Olive Ridley turtles are the five types of turtles found in Sri Lanka.
  • They retain the newborn turtles for 2-3 days after the eggs hatch so that their bodies harden enough to endure being released into the water.
  • The Centre looks at the injured and weak turtles by attempting to rehabilitate them or caring for them for the rest of their lives.
  • This is a fantastic stop not only to see and touch sea turtles but also to observe the incredible work that these individuals do and the lengths to which they go to protect these animals!

Masks

#Fashion

  • Masks are commonly used in the kolam dance and exorcism ceremonies to appease evil spirits and can be found all across the country.
  • The masks are created in Ambalagoda, on the west coast, where visitors can visit the workshops and see them being made.
  • The best quality masks are most likely to be found here.
  • Ambalangoda's folk crafts include mask and puppet creation. Both of the town's museums are run by active mask makers.
  • Most are fashioned of kaduru, a light, malleable wood comparable to balsa that allows worn for long periods.
  • They're covered in symbols to frighten the devils away, which is especially vital during exorcisms.
  • Traditional dances, dramas, comedies, and massive pageants and processions feature them, and they have even been supposed to cure ailments.
  • The two museums are direct across the street from each other, making it simple to see both.
  • The largest is Ariyapala & Sons, which also has multiple four-footed puppets constructed of the same wood and manipulated with strings.
  • Can purchase small commemorative masks to take home and terrify your devils.
  • Traditional dance performances are infrequent, but the nearby Bandu Wijesooriya School of Dance hosts them occasionally.
