- Fun lovers can easily spend most of their time relaxing on the beaches for Goa holidays, as many famous restaurants make their shacks right on the beaches to serve fresh sea food and drinks.
Basilica de Bom Jesus
- While many tourists come to Goa for the beaches, many others come to visit important religious sites such as the Basilica de Bom Jesus.
- This Old Goa attraction dates from the late 16th century and houses the St. Francis Xavier's remains.
- The "Apostle of the Indies" co-founded the Society of Jesus religious order with friend St. Ignatius Loyola and led a large mission in India.
- Since 1999, the basilica has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- You can tour the church on your own or pay a small fee to hire one of the independent guides near the entrance.

Goa Off the Beaten Track
Utorda, Majorda, and Betalbatim
- These three adjoining beaches are among the closest to the airport and are conveniently linked by local bus to each other and the regional hub of Margao.
- This is a great area for cycling, with flat paths lined by palm groves and away from the main road (and hotels often rent bikes).
- Among the few high-end resorts are some likeable mid-range hotels and an agreeable but limited range of facilities, such as the typical bamboo cafés on the sand.
- Some sections of the beaches are surprisingly deserted, while others are so undeveloped that the accommodations are nestled among buffalo farms.
Colva and Benaulim
- The laid-back feel and village vibe of Colva, popular since the Hippy Trail of the 1960s, are gradually receding each year as it becomes more developed.
- Despite the fact that it is now dominated by mid-range resorts with plenty of space and gardens, Colva is not as crowded as Calangute or Baga due to development restrictions imposed by meandering roads.
- Benaulim's quieter—and sometimes deserted—stretches of beach are a little further south.
- Both areas also have a limited selection of water sports.
Cavelossim and Mobor
- These adjoining beaches are sprinkled with top-end resorts midway along the southern coast, with some offering adorable brightly painted bungalows among vast gardens as close to the beach as possible.
- The main road through Cavelossim has a wide range of amenities and is only a short walk from the river (where boat trips are available).
- The dead-end road south to Mobor's almost Crusoe-esque beach is flat and quiet, making it ideal for cycling. (Some hotels provide bicycle rentals.)
- The fact that the main road connecting both areas is accessible via the reliable bus service is an added bonus.
Old Goa
- Old Goa (about 10 km away) is the official name for the former Goan capital, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- It is not to be confused with the old section of the state capital, Panaji (see above).
- The majority of the 30,000 inhabitants fled centuries ago during a malaria outbreak, and the remainder abandoned the city when the river silted up, so the colonial-era capital was relocated to Panaji in the mid-nineteenth century.
- The compact area of Old Goa is lined with ruins of churches, cathedrals, and forts that are beyond repair, as well as the fantastic Basilica de Bom Jesus and Sé Cathedral.
- The variety of accommodations is limited, but Old Goa is a short day trip from Panaji and has several lovely old-fashioned guesthouses.
