  • The capital of Tunis is a relaxed place, making it a great place to start your exploration of Tunisia before heading out to other regions.
  • The medina (old town) is the heart of the central city, and the main tourist attraction is simply strolling through the squiggly alleyways.
  • There are two main outdoor activities in the town. The Bardo Museum houses the world's most important mosaic collections.
  • Visitors from Hammamet and Sousse beach resorts come to the capital on sightseeing trips to see this museum.
  • The other major historical attraction is the ruins of Ancient Carthage, which are scattered throughout a Tunis suburb on the coast.
  • When you've had your fill of history in Tunis, one of the best places to visit in Sidi Bou Said, this whitewashed village is a Mediterranean idyll on the city's outskirts.

The Best Places to Visit in Tunis

destination - Seasons to travel

The Ruins of Carthage

  • The ruins of ancient Carthage, the fabled wealthy Phoenician seafaring city, are scattered across the Bay of Tunis.
  • The evocative tumbled columns and piles of marble rubble are surrounded by a panoramic view of the Mediterranean Sea, which was critical to the city's prosperity.
  • Having been destroyed in the third Punic War in 146 BCE, the remaining ruins are insignificant compared to some of North Africa's other ancient sites, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't visit.
  • The ruins have an unbeatable, lost-in-time atmosphere due to their seafront location.
  • The various sites are spaced out along the bay. Take the Tunis Light Railway line directly from the city centre to the various Carthage stops.
  • Don't miss the panoramic views from the top of Byrsa Hill.
destination - Seasons to travel

The National Bardo Museum

  • This opulent palace museum houses one of the world's three most renowned mosaic art collections (the other two are both in Turkey).
  • Inside, room after room displays gloriously intricate and still vibrantly fresh examples of mosaic art unearthed from sites throughout Tunisia.
  • The Sousse Room, Odysseus Room, and Dougga Room are the highlights, with their famous, incredibly well-preserved Hellenistic and Roman mosaic floorings. Still, the entire collection is worth an afternoon of browsing.
  • The ground floor contains some interesting non-mosaic exhibits from the Neo-Punic, Christian, and Islamic eras.
destination - Seasons to travel

Sidi Bou Said

  • Three young painters are responsible for the stunning Andalusian-style seaside neighbourhood of Sidi Bou Said's fame. Paul Klee, August Macke, and Louis Moilliet painted the beauty of its whitewashed buildings and blue doors while living here in 1914.
  • Since then, Sidi Bou Said has become a bohemian artists' quarter and a popular weekend hangout for Tunisians.
  • There are no major tourist attractions (part of its charm), but you can't help but be enchanted by the perfect white-and-blue streets, cliffside cafés, and postcard-perfect shoreline.
  • This is a place for leisurely strolling, trinket shopping, and simply sitting back with a coffee and taking in the scenery.

The Olive Tree Mosque

  • The great mosque in the medina district houses some of the country's finest examples of religious architecture.
  • Begun in 732 CE by the Umayyad dynasty, it has been added to and refined by conquering empires over the centuries.
  • Non-Muslims are not permitted to enter the prayer hall. Still, they are welcome to wander around the opulent and tranquil exterior courtyard and up to the rooftop, where dazzling tile work is displayed.
  • The rooftop is also one of the best spots in the medina for panoramic photos of the area.
destination - Seasons to travel

The Ville Nouvelle (New Town)

  • Tunis's ville nouvelle, a world away from the organic jumble of the medina, was built during the French colonial era.
  • Avenue Habib Bourguiba, a magnificently wide avenue planted with palms and eucalyptus trees, serves as its central core.
  • The street runs eastward in a straight line from just outside the medina on Place de l'Indépendance to the harbour.
  • The imposing St. Vincent de Paul Cathedral is the most significant surviving structure from Tunisia's French colonial period.
  • Its bulky neo-Romanesque facade presides grandly over the north end of Place de l'Indépendance. It was a monumental reminder of France's dominance over the country when it was built in 1893.
  • Architecture fans should check out Avenue Habib Bourguiba's wonderful mix of colonial and post-colonial buildings, from the Modernist inverted pyramid of Hotel du Lac to the more sophisticated and grand European-style government buildings.
  • Place d'Afrique has a clock monument that symbolises Tunisia's modern era at its intersection with Avenue Mohammed V.
