Cape Town: Food, Fun & Fashion Guide
Cape Malay Cuisine
#Food
- Cape Malay cuisine reigns supreme in Cape Town.
- The Dutch arrived in the Cape in 1652 to establish a port ship to stop way to the East Indies.
- The Dutch needed labourers for the expanding port, so they brought in slaves from Indonesia and other parts of Africa.
- These slaves were Islam to the Cape, and they included political dissidents who were critical of the Dutch presence in Southeast Asia.
- Despite its tragic beginnings, Cape Malay has emerged as a distinct culture distinct from the Asian, African, and Dutch cultures that influenced it.
- The importance of food in Cape Malay culture cannot be overstated.
- Cape Malay cuisine includes a variety of foods such as bredies (stews), curries, pickles, savoury snacks, and sweet treats such as the bomber koeksisters, and a variety of "porrings" (the Cape Malay take on warm puddings).
- Cape Malay celebrations such as Eid, weddings, engagements, and births are communal feasts where enough food is prepared to fill everyone's bellies, and then a "Barakat" is distributed to guests to take home.
- The Barakat is a plate of cakes and snacks that could not be consumed during the event and given to guests to thank them for attending.
Indian South Africans
#Fashion
- Outside of India, Durban is the largest Indian city, in case you didn't know.
- Indian South Africans are South African citizens, and residents descended from colonial India (South Asia) in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
- Because Indian South Africans have successfully preserved their cultural heritage over the years, traditional Indian clothing such as beautiful embroidered "saris" and "sherwanis" are usually prominent in their attire.
- Traditional Indian dresses, on the other hand, are generally saved for conventional ceremonies like weddings and funerals.
- Daily, however, western clothing is worn.
Cape Malay
#Fashion
- Another ethnic group that migrated to South Africa from South-East Asia during the slave trade was the Cape Malay.
- The Cape Malay community in Cape Town is predominantly Muslim.
- Like Indian South Africans, Cape Malay people wear mostly Western clothing in everyday life and traditional attire to mosques, madrassahs, and special occasions.
Xhosa
#Fashion
- The Xhosa people's dress code is complicated, heavily influenced by rites of passage and social status.
- Women wear clothing and accessories typically reflect their various stages of life.
- Long skirts and aprons in beautiful printed or embroidered fabrics make up traditional Xhosa clothing.
- Beaded necklaces called "ithumbu," as well as beaded bracelets and anklets, are worn around the neck.
- Married women traditionally wear the "iqhiya," or headscarf.
- Embroidered capes or blankets are worn around the shoulders to finish the look.
Traversing the V&A Waterfront
#Fun
- The seaside neighbourhood is known as the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront (V&A for short!)
- Victoria & Alfred is one of the visited areas of this bustling city.
- With so much to see and do, wandering areas can easily take up the better part of a day.
- There isn't much you can't do in this place.
- This area of town has plenty of places to eat, work, shop, and socialise.
- The Cape Wheel (a massive Ferris wheel) provides the city's best views, while street performers entertain the crowds below.
- Will serve freshly caught seafood at every restaurant, and the V&A Food Market is worth a visit, even if only to sample some South African biltong, a local favourite!
Go Up Table Mountain
#Fun
- You can't miss the iconic Table Mountain towering above the rolling hills that surround it, whether you're visiting Cape Town in the winter or summer.
- It commands your attention and dominates the skyline.
- If you're a true believer and want to take on this challenge head-on, you can always hike Table Mountain.
- Before you go, consider that Table Mountain hikes require moderate to advanced hiking skills to reach the summit and return.
Signal Hill for Sunset
#Fun
- If you're coming to Cape Town, I hope you enjoy sunsets.
- If it isn't apparent, the Cape has a plethora of locations for viewing spectacular sunsets.
- Signal Hill is the hill in front of Table Mountain and Lion's Head closest to the Waterfront.
- Unlike its neighbours, you can drive to the top, making it an ideal spot to watch the sunset while taking in panoramic views of the city and the sea below.
Head to the Beach
#Fun
- Going to the beach when visiting a city by the sea is a no-brainer!
- But there's something extra special about Cape Town's beaches.
- Don't tell anyone, but the chilly Atlantic temperatures keep beach-loving tourists away, so the beautiful beaches here are never overcrowded.
- You can even swim if you're feeling brave! When it comes to sandbagging, my favourite spots are Camps Bay and Clifton Beaches.
- Each of the Clifton Beaches consists of a slight stretch of sand separated by massive boulders.
- You can walk between them, but your toes may get soaked!
Get Lost in Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens
#Fun
- Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, located at the foot of Table Mountain, is a must-see for anyone who enjoys exotic plants, beautiful landscapes, or simply being outside.
- The entrance fee for adults is only R40, and it is open 365 days a year.
- You can quickly lose yourself in the gardens for an afternoon, with an array of African plant life intermixed with walking paths.
- If you're in Cape Town during the summer (November to March), don't miss a performance at Kirstenbosch Gardens as part of the Kirstenbosch Summer Concert Series.
- Even if you have no prior knowledge of the music, the experience is well worth it!
- Bring a picnic (bring your alcohol!)
- And arrive early to secure a spot in the grass to enjoy the concert.
